EPEAT conformity Assessment Protocols are used by
Verifiers during verification for conformance to IEEE 1680 and 1680.1.
They are also intended to assist subscribers to understand the
expectations for how to assess and demonstrate conformance. Note that they
are flexible, that is, as a general principle they are open to alternative
and equivalent ways of demonstrating conformance.
A
revised version of the IEEE 1680 computer standard was recently published
that splits the existing standard into two parts – 1680, which governs the
operations of the registration system, and 1680.1 which contains the
standard criteria for desktops, notebooks, thin client, workstations and
displays. The revisions also
contain the ‘rules of the road’ for country-specific declarations within
the international registration system, adjust the deadline for ENERGY STAR
specification adoption, and provide lower level criteria clarifications
and adjustments.
The
Version 1.3 protocols below reflect the new standards’ provisions. They are posted for review and
comment, to ensure that their meaning is clear.
Comments will be accepted on Version 1.3
from March 15 – April 1. Following any revisions in response to comments, this
version of the Protocols will become final. Send all comments to
wayne.rifer@greenelectronicscouncil.org.

NOTE to Subscribers: The revised IEEE 1680 standard is in full force today –
any verification of product registrations will be carried out with reference to
the new 1680 and 1680.1 standards as published by IEEE. The protocols below
provide guidance, but their interim status does not delay verification to the
revised standard(s).
